What are Biopses?

Biopsies are simple yet important procedures that allow your provider to collect small samples of tissue from areas like the cervix, uterus (endometrium), vulva, or vagina to check for abnormal or precancerous cells.

When is it needed?

Biopsies are recommended when Pap smears, ultrasounds, or exams show unusual results that need further investigation. Biopsies can detect endometrial hyperplasia, uterine cancer, cervical dysplasia, or vulvar skin disorders. Depending on the area being examined, your provider may perform a cervical biopsy during a colposcopy, an endometrial biopsy to assess the uterine lining, or a vulvar biopsy for visible skin changes.

Getting a biopsy when recommended is a proactive step in protecting your reproductive health. It allows for early detection and timely treatment of conditions before they progress, giving you peace of mind and control over your care. If your provider suggests a biopsy, know that it's a common, safe, and essential part of comprehensive women’s health care.

Expectations

These procedures are typically done in the office and require little to no recovery time. While you might feel some pressure or brief cramping, discomfort is minimal and the process is usually completed in just a few minutes. The tissue sample is then sent to a lab for analysis, helping your provider diagnose or rule out conditions such as cervical dysplasia, endometrial hyperplasia, uterine cancer, or vulvar skin disorders.
