The infection can spread from the vagina and cervix to the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. If not treated early, PID can lead to long-term complications, including:
Chronic pelvic pain
Scarring of the fallopian tubes
Ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy outside the uterus)
Infertility
PID doesn’t always cause noticeable symptoms—especially in its early stages. But as the infection progresses, it can cause:
Pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis
Pain or bleeding during intercourse
Unusual vaginal discharge (often with odor)
Fever or chills
Painful or frequent urination
Irregular menstrual bleeding
Lower back pain
Nausea or fatigue
