What is a Colposcopy Assessment for Cervical Cancer?

A colposcopy is a simple, in-office procedure used to closely examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva when a Pap smear shows abnormal cells. Think of it as a magnified look at your cervix to better identify anything that doesn’t look quite right.

Why do you need it?

You may be referred for a colposcopy if your recent Pap smear results showed:

Abnormal cells (dysplasia)Positive HPV (Human Papillomavirus)—especially high-risk types

Signs of precancerous changesUnclear or unsatisfactory Pap results that need closer evaluation

Colposcopy helps us see whether further treatment is needed or if everything is okay and just needs monitoring.

Colposcopy is a quick, non-surgical office procedure that typically takes 10 to 15 minutes. Here’s what will happen:

You’ll lie on the exam table just like during a Pap smear.

A speculum is gently inserted to view the cervix.

Your provider uses a colposcope (a specialized microscope) to look at the cervix.

A mild solution is applied to highlight any abnormal areas.

If needed, a small biopsy (tiny tissue sample) may be taken for lab analysis.
