What is Vaginal Rejuvenation?

Vaginal Rejuvenation, also known as Vaginoplasty, refers to surgical procedures that restore the vaginal anatomy to a more youthful look, feel, and function. Vaginal Aesthetic and Rejuvenation Surgery, or Vaginoplasty, refers to two types of surgical procedures: Cosmetic and Functional.

Vaginoplasty

Cosmetic: Aesthetic Vaginoplasty is performed to improve the appearance of the external portion of the vagina and vulva. Many women who are born with enlarged labia or have this occur after childbirth or as part of the normal aging process, consider vaginal cosmetic surgery to help improve the appearance of these structures.

Functional: Vaginoplasty to improve or enhance sexual function corrects damage that occurs to the supportive tissues in the walls of the vagina and muscles as a result of vaginal childbirth or aging. This damage can result in a relaxed vaginal canal and or a gaping vaginal opening. Vaginoplasty tightens the inside of the vaginal canal and the opening of the vagina to increase friction and improve sexual sensation.

Procedure/recovery

Procedure:

Vaginoplasty is performed by a urogynecologist or vaginal reconstructive surgeon under general anesthesia and in a hospital setting where you will stay for a maximum of two days. Vaginoplasty is a standard gynecologic surgical procedure that takes about 60 – 90 minutes with you spending about an hour in the recovery room where you are monitored for any post-operative complications.

Recovery:

After your surgery, there will be some pain and discomfort. Your physician will prescribe medication to relieve pain and antibiotics to prevent infection. You will also be instructed to refrain from sexual intercourse for at least 2 weeks or until you heal completely. This is very important since the contraction of vaginal muscles during sexual activity may cause tearing and incomplete or delayed healing.

After a week you will have your sutures removed and receive instructions on specific exercises to strengthen and tighten your pelvic muscles. Vaginal muscle stretching exercises are very important since they can reduce the amount of scar tissue formed and help to ensure an adequate-sized vagina.

You must also avoid being constipated and lifting heavy objects for about a month after your surgery.
