Perimenopause is the stage that occurs several years before menopause officially begins. During this time, the ovaries gradually produce less estrogen and progesterone, leading to hormonal fluctuations. Many women begin to notice early signs such as irregular periods, mood changes, or hot flashes.
Menopause is officially diagnosed when a woman has not had a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months. This stage brings a range of symptoms, the severity and duration of which can vary widely. We do offer options to relieve these symptoms with HRT. Common symptoms include:
Irregular Periods: Periods may come more or less frequently, be lighter or heavier, and vary in duration. Hormonal treatments, such as birth control, can help regulate cycles.
Hot Flashes & Night Sweats: These are among the most common and disruptive symptoms. Hot flashes cause sudden warmth, flushing, and sweating, while night sweats can interfere with sleep.
Mood & Memory Changes: Hormonal shifts can lead to irritability, anxiety, depression, or forgetfulness. If you find these symptoms are impacting your daily life, it’s important to speak with your provider.
Vaginal Dryness: Lower estrogen levels can cause the vaginal tissue to become drier and thinner, leading to discomfort or pain during intercourse.
Postmenopause begins after a full year without a menstrual period. For most women, menopausal symptoms gradually subside during this time.
However, due to persistently lower estrogen levels, postmenopausal women face increased risks for conditions such as osteoporosis and heart disease.
